Most of us are familiar with common hockey terms such as blue lines or body check, but Hockey does indeed have its own language. Here are 20 of the most popular and their meanings.
1. Barn -Rink or arena.
2. Twig – A hockey Stick.
3. Biscuit – The puck.
4. Bucket – A helmet
5. Celly – A celebration after a goal is scored.
6. Cherry Picker – Or floater. Player who stays around the red line looking for breakaway passes, neglecting their defensive zone duties.
7. Deke – To fake an opponent out of position.
8. Chirp – Trash talk/Insults directed toward an opponent, their bench or refs.
9. Clapper – A slapshot; referring to player with a powerful slapshot or a slapshot.
10. Dangle – Refers to a great stick-handling manoeuvre.
11. Gongshow – Used when a game gets out of hand with multiple fights, lots of penalties, and lots goals.
12. Gitch – Slang for undergarments worn under hockey equipment.
13. Grinder – A player that usually plays on the dump and chase line. Their role is to finish his checks and wear down the opponents.
14. Mitts – Refers to a player’s hands, often or gloves.
15. One-T – One-Timer… Shooting the puck while in motion.
16. Pylon – A player that is very slow on the ice; can easily be skated around.
17. Sauce – A well executed pass (a pass that goes in the air, hits back on the ice right before getting to the recipient) that sits flat on the receiving player’s tape.
18. Sieve – A terrible goalie; Has many holes to shoot through.
19. Snipe/ Sniper – (My Favorite!) A great shot that results in a goal. A player that scores often.
20. Stripes – Slang for referee.
