The percentage of goals scored in these areas at all levels, are just one of many reasons why most coaches and teams try to work the puck into and shoot from the middle of the slot zone area.
The more successful teams use the textbook triangular attack to create more scoring chances.
- When crossing over the blue line, entering the offensive zone, the puck carrier drives wide and low. (Taking the Defenseman off the dot line and turning hem around, then the puck carrier can pass either other forward, or shoot) A triple threat.
- One player drives/skates towards the net.
- One player sets up as a trailer (coming in later with patience and more net front presence) completing the triangular formation.
Some coaches will allow a Defenseman to engage into open ice off the initial attack, if the opportunity presents itself, as another potential scoring threat.
